Venezuela: Chavez allows devaluation

Today there are news of a new (implicit) dollar rate (see newspaper) of about 3,00 Bs.F/$. It will be in the market at the same time as the 2,15 rate for ESSENTIAL items and the "free" rate for luxury items, which I estimate will be around 4,30 BsF/$. I PREDICTED this would happen about six month ago and now have proved right...

Democrats road to defeat

I think the same as this New York Times columnist: "The Democrats are doing everything they can to blow this presidential election. This is a skill that comes naturally to the party. There is no such thing as a can’t-miss year for the Democrats. They are truly gifted at finding ways to lose. Jimmy Carter managed to win the White House in 1976 by looking pious and riding a wave of anti-Watergate revulsion. After four hapless years, he dutifully handed the keys back to the Republicans. Bill Clinton tried hard to lose, with sex scandals and whatnot, during the 1992 campaign. But Ross Perot wouldn’t let him. Mr. Clinton won with a piddling 43 percent of the vote. For eight years, Mr. Clinton tried to throw the presidency away (with sex scandals and whatnot), but he was never able to succeed..."

The uglyness of unfairness

"There are two important countries at the north of South America. One, Colombia, has a democratic government that, with strong support from the Clinton and Bush administrations, has bravely sought to defeat brutal militias of the left and right and to safeguard human rights.

The other, Venezuela, has a repressive government that has undermined media freedoms, forcibly nationalized industries, rallied opposition to the United States and, recent evidence suggests, supported terrorist groups inside Colombia.

That U.S. unions, human rights groups and now Democrats would focus their criticism and advocacy on the former, to the benefit of the latter, shows how far they have departed from their own declared principles."

Chavez will be defeated in the regional elections

Columnist Miguel Salazar said today in his popular Friday column the result will be 51% to 48%.

I think the result will be closer to 66% to 33%...

Backwards, like the crab

It was not necessary to "knock down" Colonel Narciso to return Venezuela to the (misnamed and hated) Fourth Republic.

Narciso himself has already
spent 7 billion to re Staticize the national productive apparatus, which incidentally he
progressively is destroying with other anachronistic measures.

Newspapers say it today:

"Chavez spends fortunes in estatizations" - El Comercio (Ecuador)

Fedecámaras: "We are facing the destruction of the productive apparatus" - (Venezuela)

... and 14 more newspaper articles in "El Carabobeño" - "El Financiero" (México) - "Unión Radio " (Venezuela) - "El Nuevo Dia" (Venezuela), etc...

``On Air'' or soup opera retro feeding

Some 20 dramas are aired every week in a country like Korea. There are daily dramas, morning dramas, weekend dramas… and Wednesday-Thursday dramas. Not too different for Latina American countries, but Asia in fact is the new ``kingdom'' of drama series”.

Now there a new series (On Air) portrays how soaps operas are made. Titled On Air, it is a drama about the people who create these dramas.

Since Korean dramas are not only aired in Korea but in other countries as well, they decided to write a drama about the processes and behind-the-scenes stories with a dramatic and exaggerative touch. It is directed by Shin Woo-chul and written by Kim Eun-suk, the creators of great hit dramas like ``Lovers in Paris'' (2004), ``Lovers in Prague'' (2005) and ``Lovers'' (2006).

Actress Kim Ha-neul plays an arrogant topnotch actress named O Seung-a.

Actor Lee Beom-soo plays Jang Gi-jun, O's agent. By playing this agent character, I now have an objective and better view of my managers,'' said Lee.

Actress Song Yoon-a portrays a mean TV scriptwriter with a Midas touch. She is the “other side” of the real soup writer.

Finally, Actor Park Yong-ha plays drama producer/director Lee Gyeong-min, who works with all of the characters above.

The drama also has many “cameo” appearances. The list of cameos includes the Queen of Cannes Jeon Do-yeon, K-pop diva Lee Hyo-ri, Kang Hae-jung of the movie ``Herb'' (2007), Um Ji-won of ``Scout'' (2007), Kim Min-jun, who starred in Shin and Kim's 2005 drama ``Lovers in Prague,'' and K-pop group F.T. Island. These actresses mostly appear as top stars like themselves.

It was not easy to ask these ladies to guest star, because it might misrepresent them despite the satirical nature of the drama. They are so popular in Asia that some of these stars get 5 and 10 Million US$ per one 16-20 episodes serie. That is a lot of money for TV stars any where.

It is fiction feeding reality and reality feeding fiction…

Chavez pals: Campbell arrested, Mugabe a criminal

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has been arrested at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 for allegedly spitting at a police officer, Sky News television reported Thursday. A London Metropolitan Police spokesman said a woman was arrested at the terminal for an assault on police, but refused to disclose her identity or give her age. Robert Mugabe´s government forces on Thursday began cracking down on the main opposition party and foreign journalists -- raising fears of a political crisis -- just hours after officials announced another delay in releasing results of last weekend's election. Zimbabwean government forces Thursday began cracking down on the main opposition party, raising fears of a political crisis, according to witnesses and an opposition spokesman.

New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller confirmed that Barry Bearak, a Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent based in Johannesburg, South Africa, was taken into custody. The forces raided at least two hotels in the capital, including one that houses foreign journalists, a witness told CNN. Four journalists "unaccredited" by the Zimbabwean government were taken away, he said.

Adios Mr. Mugabe

With 98% of the counties counted, Mr. Mugabe loses 50,3% to 42,9%.

No way he can win in the popular vote, but he could still rig the last 2 undefined seats and force a second round...
